Birthday Girl vs. Ryan's Daughter

Birthday Girl is an insubstantial romance/crime movie, and the only reason I watched it was because Nicole Kidman is in it. Ryan's Daughter is a beautiful to look at romance/drama, but it has an extremely annoying character that cheapens the rest of the movie. Still, Birthday Girl has nothing truly significant going for it at all. The good parts in Ryan's Daughter are at least worthwhile enough to watch again.

Ryan's Daughter is a well done romantic epic filmed along the beautiful Irish coast. Birthday Girl is a cautionary tale about a man who gets more than he bargained for in Russian bride. Nicole Kidman is not very convincing as the bride.

If forced to choose a film to watch over again, I would have to go with Birthday Girl. It has all the plot twists to keep the story moving. Ryan's Daughter pales in comparison to David Lean's other epics (and even to his shorter films such as Brief Encounter). Instead of keeping to a tight narrative focusing on Rosy's marriage and affair, Lean decides to insert distracting side stories about Irish revolutionaries and the misadventures of the town mute.
