Michael Winterbottom was definitely paying homage to the original Voyage to Italy in his sequel to The Trip, but the original is also flawed with what I read as provincial post-war attitudes. Both movies even have similar sequences towards the end but the dry wit of Coogan and Brydon actually make the pathos work better.
