Twentieth Century vs. It Happened One Night

1934 marked the birth of one of my favorite genres, the screwball comedy. Three movies played a part in its inauguration: The Thin Man (which I haven't seen and which doubles as a mystery film), Howard Hawks's Twentieth Century, and (most especially) Frank Capra's It Happened One Night. Of the two films under consideration here, I far prefer It Happened One Night. It has a heart and its characters do too, although they may attempt to hide the fact at first. Despite the dynamite cast of John Barrymore and Carole Lombard, Twentieth Century is the least lovable and most heartless of Hawks's comedies. I admire its craft, but it never really pulled me in.

Twentieth Century gives Barrymore license to overact, and he delivers (Lombard and the supporting characters are pretty frenetic, as well). It's not as good as IHON, but it does have its charms.
