The Fifth Element is classic action fun, but the Matrix blows me away pretty much every time.

I was afraid of this. The Fifth Element was great, but The Matrix had brilliant writing.
I really do love The Fifth Element - but MATRIX is one of those rare inventive masterpieces. The visuals are still stunning. The story unique (including the sequels)

The Matrix is a much more visionary and awe-inspiring film. The Fifth Element is middling sci-fi entertainment, nothing more.
