Watchmen vs. Gangs of New York

Tough choice!

Gangs of New York is all style and no substance. It's a completely gorgeous film that lacks a strong narrative and relies on a lot of familiar storytelling devices. It's not bad, but one of Scorsese's more lackluster outings. The same argument could be made for Watchmen I guess, but to me it's a more complete and well-rounded film.

gangs of new york is a movie based on reality: it actually happened; and is actually damn close to true history accept the names of the characters. watchmen is an alternate reality. it is a fake history of the world. a reality that could have happened if there were true superheroes in the world. gangs of new york has more to do for fighting for a place in a new world than anything. watchmen is more showing what human nature really is about and how that is both a blessing and a curse. gangs of new york is more about revenge than anything, while watchmen is about balance, about peace, about sacrafice. both are great movies, they both fight for the right to be free of "foreign" hordes controlling their world. they both end in death/sorrow/sadness.

For me, this eventually comes down to one thing: Daniel Day-Lewis as Bill the Butcher gives "Gangs of New York" the edge. What a terrific performance that was!
