Henry V vs. Henry V

Olivier was good in his time, but Branaugh brought Shakespeare into modern times and made it visceral.

Both are great films, and both execute their ambitious ideas masterfully, but I have to give the slight edge to Olivier because his approach (starting with a play, becoming more realistic, and returning to the play) adds a layer of depth and complexity that was unexpected. Branaugh is still the best Shakespearean director of contemporary cinema, but Olivier created an essential cinematic Shakespeare.

Hard to believe that these two films are the same play: Branagh's film emphasizes war's horrors, while Olivier shows the nobility and glory. Olivier wins, because he's Olivier performing Shakespeare, but Branagh's film is a noble effort.
