Hereditary went straight to horror classics, Midsommar went nowhere.

Hereditary is great, but it's a mile below Midsommar in my opinion. Hereditary is very singular in its own way, but I still can compare it to its immediate influences such as The Shining, while Midsommar is so different and unique. It's trippy and disturbing. It caught my attention at its very first moment, meanwhile Hereditary took its time to caught it. Midsommar felt like an improvement in every way, from cinematic techniques to plot and symbolism. Going with it.
Two excellent films with a slight edge to Hereditary.

Potential minor spoilers. Last night I watched Midsommar for a one night only directors cut screening, and damn, I don't think any other movie has had this sort of affect on me! It hooked me in and just wouldn't let go. Ever since I can't get it out of my head! I'm not going to add it to my chart just because it hasn't fully sunk in and it's just so different to anything else I've ever seen. I'm not going to say what one I preferred here as I don't know which ones better but I will compare the two. Hereditary is about family grief and Midsommar is a break-up story. Ari understands character writing and making characters real seeming, morally ambiguous and compelling. Everyone in both can be viewed as self righteous assholes yet we route for them because their motivations are so deep and well realised. In terms of style both are visually gorgeous and subtely hints at story details and themes. Hereditary is dark, gloomy and mostly in the shadows while Midsommar is very bright and overexposed. There's a turning point in both films where everything goes insane and left me both wanting to look away and on the edge of my seat. Just genius filmmaking to make me feel all the emotions these two made me feel. Do I have any problems with these two? Well both do flutter a little in their third acts comparison to their magnificent first and second acts. Hereditary creates some logical errors while Midsommar could've had more satisfying answers to its supporting cast. Nevertheless, these are two of the best and most memorising horror films of the last decade!

I changed my mind after a third viewing to Midsommar.

I am apparently one of the few people who thought Hereditary was great (or pretty good, at least), and outrighted loathed Midsommar, but I stand by it.

I find myself re-watching Midsommar a lot more
