Different approaches to enforcing the law. Very different approaches. Homer Simpson said that alcohol was the cause of and solution to all of life's problems. Here Dirty Harry seems to think that it's the gun rather than alcohol that fills that role. The film is celebration of the gun as the tool essential for the proper maintenance of order in a civilized society in the same way that many Westerns have done over the years. It even takes center stage in the title of the film. However, it's not the only way as The Blue Lamp proves. Here police work, bravery, intelligence, a little bit of male-voice choir-singing, and above all teamwork, root out the ne'er-do-wells. It's a better film all round.
