Two excellent coming of age movies about boys. I will have to go with Stand By Me.
These are both character-driven films and Stand by Me had the stronger, more colorful characters.
400 Blows absolutely stands the test of time. It doesn't beat Stand By Me though....Stephen King storytelling at it's pinnacle (along with Shawshank, Green Mile).

The 400 Blows is one of the most haunting films ever made. I wins.
