French New Wave venerable classic vs. Italian neorealism venerable classic. The Bicycle Thief is mostly about looking for a stolen bike, with nice little human moments thrown in. The 400 Blows is the adventures of a kid who just can't get no respect from adults. Neither of these films are sentimental , but rather just show people how they are. Which is what I like about both of them. The 400 Blows is more entertaining overall, though. Neither movie is optimistic in regard to the characters, but The 400 Blows is less of a downer.
