The 400 Blows vs. Fanny and Alexander

Both films are coming-of-age stories that are marred by having less-than-stellar protagonists. Neither Antoine Doinel nor Alexander Ekdahl are very likable characters (most of their troubles are of their own doing), so it's difficult to sympathize with either of them. The 400 Blows, though, has a far more interesting story and is so much more succinct. Fanny and Alexander may actually hold the all-time record for most pointless subplots in one movie. Francois Truffaut wins this one...
