Chicago was good but I don't think it comes close to matching West Side Story

An insanely difficult choice, seeing as I love both musicals to death. Oh well, when it comes down to it I guess I'm going to pick West Side Story.

Chicago is a fun, fast-paced musical with some great performances (CATHERINE ZETA-JONES!) but I don't think it matches the tragic grandeur of West Side Story. The dancing certainly isn't as good.
I hate both because i hate musicals ( except Lion King). I guess i would go West Side Story because its a classic.

Chicago is great fun but West Side Story is better executed technically with its musical numbers and more emotionally resonant. It also somehow manages to still feel true to Shakespeare's original story amidst being the rousing, sweeping musical it is, whereas Chicago has a bit of a questionable feminist undertone to it.
