Spring Breakers vs. Requiem for a Dream

Well, these are both about dreamers on drugs. James Franco as Alien dreams of having his own drug empire a la Scarface, except it doesn't turn out that way. The addicts in Requiem also have dreams that go horribly awry. Spring Breakers is stylish, as is Requiem, but in a less intrusive manner. A little Requiem goes a long way, and that ending is brutal. Not a movie I care to watch often. Spring Breakers is strangely inspiring.

I think the aesthetics of these two really impact the tone. Requiem's dire, unrelenting bleakness of content is matched by that purposefully off-putting, almost monochromatic palette. Breakers' content is a lot more thoughtful and depressing than it's dizzyingly gorgeous cinematography would have you believe. Really, the content and colour in that film are totally in contrast (hah, "contrast", I slay myself). Good viewing, good soundtracks, good times.
