As much as I love Casino Royale, The Devils really is an assault on the senses. Amazing acting, amazing production design and camera work, disonant and creepy orchestral strains, and a damning enditement of the association of politics, religion and corruption therein during pre-revolutionary films. Casino Royale is probably the more rewatchable and conventonally entertaining, and as I said, I love, but The Devils was a rarely extraordinary film. So much so that it has broken into my upper echelon of films. The Devils wins.
