Forrest Gump is something special, a movie that makes you feel all fuzzy inside for a character that is not normal. Neverending Story, while good, is more kids-oriented so it's not really the same.
I will agree that Never Ending Story is a bit too juvenile, but I thought Forrest Gump kinda lacked a point so I'm picking the juvenile one here.
