Spellbound vs. Persona

I just watched "Persona" for the first time a couple months ago. Disturbed the hell outta me! The footage early on of people setting themselves afire... Good Lord. Couldn't shake that image for some time. It's definitely more of a Rorschach test than your typical escapist entertainment. "Spellbound", on the other hand, is wonderful.

Persona hands down. Spellbound is good, but hardly Hitchcock's best work.

Persona is my favorite Bergman film. It's got that experimental edge that I think fits his deep philosophical angst perfectly this time around, and it hits me just as powerfully every time I see it. Spellbound is a solid Hitchcock film, but a second-tier one at best - the best sequence is the Dali dream sequence, and even then it's explain in such a one-to-one correlative way (as is typical of '40s psychotherapy) that it takes the edge off. Persona wins for keeping the edge on in spades.

not even close. Persona.
