Russell Crowe to Play Jor-El in ‘Superman’ Reboot
Academy Award winner Russell Crowe has been tapped to play Jor-El, the father of Superman, in director Zack Snyder‘s upcoming reboot Man of Steel. The casting of such a prominent actor in the role certainly brings back memories of Marlon Brando in Richard Donner‘s Superman.
Crowe joins a cast that already includes Henry Cavill as Kal-El/Superman, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Kevin Costner and Diane Lane as Kal-El’s adoptive parents, the Kents, and Michael Shannon as the villain, Zod. The role of Jor-El’s wife, Lara, has yet to be announced, but Crowe’s Gladiator co-star, Connie Nielsen, is rumored to be up for the part.
Russell Crowe is certainly an A-list actor, but he nonetheless has some big shoes to fill. How will he compare to Brando?
Man of Steel is currently slated to begin production next month in Vancouver, aiming for a holiday 2012 release.

It’s pretty hard to top Brando, but I’m still quite excited by this piece of casting. Crowe is a great actor, but it’s been a while since I’ve seen him in anything good.

This is an awesome cast so far. I would never have guessed Crowe as Jor-El though.
