New Releases on DVD, Blu-ray and Netflix Instant: November 16th, 2010
There’s no way I make it out of this week without spending $200 in Blu-rays. The car payment can wait.
Rank November 16th’s Blu-ray and DVD releases against the best films of all-time
A Christmas Carol (DVD and (3D)Blu-ray | PG | 2009)
How would you rank it amongst the best Christmas movies of all time?
Flickchart Ranking: #4836 |
What do you fellow Flickcharters have to say?
Charyou_Tree – “A lifeless rendering of a classic Christmas story is no match for Pixar, even if the Pixar film in the other corner just so happens to be the worst they have produced thus far.”
(From Discussion for Cars vs A Christmas Carol)
The Last Airbender (DVD and Blu-ray | PG | 2010)
How would you rank it amongst the best martial arts movies of all time?
Flickchart Ranking: #7862 |
What do you fellow Flickcharters have to say?
celticshk – “Two of the worst films ever. Really hard to decide which is worse, but I think The Last Airbender wins by a small margin as it charges higher ticket price for its 3D effects.”
(From Discussion for The Last Airbender vs. Batman & Robin)
The Kids Are All Right (DVD and Blu-ray | R | 2010)
How would you rank it amongst the best domestic comedy movies of all time?
Flickchart Ranking: #5120 |
One of those semi-indie movies that comes around every year that white people go crazy for (myself included). This one stars Mark Ruffalo and Julianne Moore.
Lottery Ticket (DVD and Blu-ray | PG-13 | 2010)
How would you rank it amongst the best urban comedies of all time?
Flickchart Ranking: #17602 |
A movie with Keith David in it should be ranked more than 5 times between theater and DVD release. I’m stunned by that number. It made $4 million more than The Kids Are All Right but was ranked .3% as many times.
Classics and Re-releases on DVD and Blu-ray:
The Night of the Hunter (Criterion DVD and Blu-ray | NR | 1955)
How would you rank it amongst the best thrillers of all time?
Flickchart Ranking: #1285 |
My 3rd favorite movie of all-time and depending on the day, I would maybe call it number 1. It’s flat-out brilliant and breathtakingly thrilling. Robert Mitchum is perfect. I strongly recommend watching this back-to-back with the almost equally amazing British flick Never Take Candy from a Stranger.
Sherlock Jr. (KINO DVD and Blu-ray | NR | 1924)
How would you rank it amongst the best comedies of all time?
Flickchart Ranking: #3322 |
This is Buster Keaton’s masterpiece (#19 on my list). No movie is more inventive and I can’t think of any movie with a more perfect ending. If you’ve always been hesitant to get into Silent movies, this is a great starting point. It’s short, endlessly clever and lightning fast. One of Keaton’s other movies, “Three Ages,” is also included in the set.
Avatar (DVD and Blu-ray | PG-13 | 2009)
How would you rank it amongst the best 2010 best picture Oscar nominees?
Flickchart Ranking: #683 |
The Blu-ray release we’ve all been waiting for. This set is absolutely loaded. I’ve watched this movie at least 5 times in the last two months and like it more and more each time.
The Complete Metropolis (KINO DVD and Blu-ray | NR | 1927)
How would you rank it amongst the best science fiction movies of all time?
Flickchart Ranking: #816 |
What a battle between KINO and Criterion this week. Two must-haves from each company. Let’s hope they keep this up!
Modern Times (Criterion DVD and Blu-ray | NR | 1936)
How would you rank it amongst the best satires of all time?
Flickchart Ranking: #1009 |
1080p Chaplin and Keaton in the same week? Man, I am in heaven…
Mutiny on the Bounty (Blu-ray | NR | 1935)
How would you rank it amongst the best sea adventure movies of all time?
Flickchart Ranking: #5092 |
Clark Gable and Charles Laughton headline this amazing telling of the classic tale.
The Phantom Tollbooth (Warner Archive DVD | NR | 1970)
How would you rank it amongst the best family movies of all time?
Flickchart Ranking: #4935 |
Every single kids movie ever made should be this imaginative. It’s clever and educational, all while being a whole lot of fun. It’s a mix of live action and hand-drawn animation directed by the great Chuck Jones (Looney Toons). Highly recommended.
Check out all of the Warner Archive New Releases here. They have a bunch of Errol Flynn and Barbara Stanwyck movies.
Monte Walsh (DVD | PG | 1970)
How would you rank it amongst the best revisionist westerns of all time?
Flickchart Ranking: #8777 |
Lee Marvin is just plain awesome.
RoboGeisha (DVD and Blu-ray | NR | 2009)
How would you rank it amongst the best action comedy movies of all time?
Flickchart Ranking: #18230 |
