How do this week’s Blu-ray and DVD releases rank against the best movies of all-time?
Predators (DVD and Blu-ray | R | 2010)
How would you rank it amongst the best monster movies of all time?
Flickchart Ranking: #3724 |
Happy to see this has been well-received by the Flickchart community. The first two (yes, both) are classics and it’s nice to see the series return to being bad-ass. Check out Flickchart user johnmason’s review.
Dolph Lundgren is… The Killing Machine (DVD | R | 2010)
How would you rank it amongst the best thrillers of all time?
Flickchart Ranking: #11744 |
If you are in any way a Dolph Lundgren fan, you should definitely give this a shot. It’s pretty fantastic.
Agora (DVD | R | 2009)
How would you rank it amongst the best thrillers of all time?
Flickchart Ranking: #9557 |
Director Alejandro Amenabar’s tale of Christianity during the Roman Empire. Rachel Weisz stars.
And that’s about it. Everything else is essentially just DTV that doesn’t feature Dolph Lundgren and smaller, but in most cases interesting, movies. Here’s a quick list:
- Mirrors 2 – DTV sequel starring Nick Stahl
- Night of the Demons – DTV horror starring Edward Furlong and Shannon Elizabeth
- Giallo – Director Dario Argento’s latest, featuring Adrien Brody
- Six Wives of Henry Lefay – Tim Allen and a bunch of attractive women like Paz Vega and Elisha Cuthbert.
- Please Give – Catherine Keener and Oliver Platt in a movie about a rich Manhattan family.
- Assault Girls – Rinko Kikuchi (of Babel fame) in a flick about 3 ladies sent into a virtual world.
- Vampire Girl vs Frankenstein Girl – The title says it all, doesn’t it?
- Shoot the Hero – DTV featuring Jason Mewes and Danny Trejo
Classics and Re-releases on DVD and Blu-ray:
Psycho (Blu-ray | NR | 1960)
How would you rank it amongst the best horror movies of all time?
Flickchart Ranking: #108 |
Number 15 on my Flickchart. I hated the movie the first time I saw it (I was 16 and hated anything made before I was born). Obviously, I’ve grown to love it. I think it’s perfect in every single way, and the attention to small details is amazing.
Apocalypse Now (Blu-ray | R | 1979)
How would you rank it amongst the best war movies of all time?
Flickchart Ranking: #70 |
Number 14 on my Flickchart. I’d argue this is the most well-crafted film in history. It’s technically amazing and features some of the most memorable moments ever put to film. If you haven’t seen this yet, drop everything and get it now.
The Seven Samurai (Criterion Collection Blu-ray | NR | 1954)
How would you rank it amongst the best samurai movies of all time?
Flickchart Ranking: #387 |
The week just keeps getting better and better with classics being released on Blu-ray. This is one of Kurosawa’s best. Which is saying a lot because the man didn’t make bad movies.
The Rocky Horror Picture Show (Blu-ray | R | 1975)
How would you rank it amongst the best musicals of all time?
Flickchart Ranking: #486 |
I love musicals and think the “Time Warp” sequence is incredible, but as a whole, it just never works for me.
Moulin Rouge (Blu-ray | PG13 | 2001)
How would you rank it amongst the best romantic musicals of all time?
Flickchart Ranking: #256 |
Here’s a movie I could watch on an endless loop. If the opportunity arose, I would completely understand if my wife left me for Ewan McGregor.
Romeo + Juliet (Blu-ray | PG13 | 1996)
How would you rank it amongst the best tragedies of all time?
Flickchart Ranking: #438 |
This version of the play is pretty hollow but it’s a lot of fun.
