New DVDs, Blu-rays and Netflix Streaming Movies: January 18, 2011
There are a ton of smaller movies on DVD and Blu-ray this week. Take a look…
Rank the week of January 18th’s Blu-ray and DVD new releases against the best movies ever made:
Buried (DVD and Blu-ray | R | 2010)
Rank it amongst the best thriller movies of all time.
Flickchart Ranking: #1562 |
Ryan Reynolds gets buried alive.
Animal Kingdom (DVD and Blu-ray | R | 2010)
Rank it amongst the best crime thriller movies of all time.
Flickchart Ranking: #2151 |
Look at that win percentage! From what I hear, imagine if Scorsese was Australian and this is what you’d end up with. This movie also furthers my theory that Guy Pearce is incapable of making a bad movie.
Takers (DVD and Blu-ray | PG-13 | 2010)
Rank it amongst the best caper movies of all time.
Flickchart Ranking: #7830 |
So, Takers makes $60 million and gets ranked 400 times but Animal Kingdom makes $1 million and gets ranked 1800 times… Either the vast majority of Flickchart’s users are from Australia or we’re smart enough to know to avoid any movie with Hayden Christensen in it. Regardless, Idris Elba is in it so it’s at least worth a rent to me.
Stone (DVD and Blu-ray | R | 2010)
Rank it amongst the best psychological thriller movies of all time.
Flickchart Ranking: #9021 |
Starring Edward Norton, Robert De Niro and Milla Jovovich.
Death Race 2 (DVD and Blu-ray | R | 2011)
Rank it amongst the best prison movies of all time.
Flickchart Ranking: Just Added |
Is it strange that I’m more excited for this DTV sequel than I was for Death Race? This one stars Sean Bean, Ving Rhames and Danny Trejo.
Paper Man (DVD and Blu-ray | R | 2009)
Rank it amongst the best psychological drama movies of all time.
Flickchart Ranking: #7874 |
Big Week for Ryan Reynolds. He’s an imaginary superhero friend to a writer in this one. Also stars Emma Stone.
Jack Goes Boating (DVD and Blu-ray | R | 2010)
Rank it amongst the best slice of life comedy movies of all time.
Flickchart Ranking: #8515 |
Starring Phillip Seymour Hoffman
Lebanon (DVD and Blu-ray | R | 2009)
Rank it amongst the best war movies of all time.
Flickchart Ranking: #7681 |
A movie about the chaos of war set during the First Lebanon War in 1982.
The Virginity Hit (DVD and Blu-ray | R | 2010)
Rank it amongst the best Mockumentary movies of all time.
Flickchart Ranking: #10678 |
Mockumentary about a kid trying to document losing his virginity.
Down Terrace (DVD and Blu-ray | R | 2009)
Rank it amongst the best crime comedy movies of all time.
Flickchart Ranking: #18420 |
British Crime Flick.
Classics and Re-Releases on DVD and Blu-ray:
Shock Corridor (Criterion DVD and Blu-ray | NR | 1963)
Rank it amongst the best mystery movies of all time.
Flickchart Ranking: #5195 |
Synopsis: “Bent on winning a Pulitzer Prize, a journalist commits himself to a mental institution to solve a strange and unclear murder.” It’s in the more than capable hands of Director Samuel Fuller. I’d just like to thank Criterion now for releasing this in HD.
The Naked Kiss (Criterion DVD and Blu-ray | NR | 1964)
Rank it amongst the best drama movies of all time.
Flickchart Ranking: #6837 |
I can’t say it much better than this – Here’s what Flickchart User “topichtennis” has to say about the flick (From the Naked Kiss Movie Page):
“Samuel Fuller is a masterful story teller. The movie opens up in the midst of of woman slamming her purse into the camera. Little things like that make the movie pop. The other great thing about this movie is a strong female lead. You hardly ever see strong female characters in movies these days. But here Constance Towers beats up on men, women, prostitutes, and whoever gets in the way of her dream. The movie does lag a bit in places and unravels very happenstancely. I think I like Shock Corridor better than this one, but Fuller can direct a scene simplistically but powerfully like during the murder scene here.”
Fire on the Amazon (DVD and Blu-ray | R | 1993)
Rank it amongst the best adventure movies of all time.
Flickchart Ranking: #20115 |
The only reason this movie is getting a DVD/Blu-ray release is because Sandra Bullock takes of her clothes in it.

DISH only charges $10/mo for all of this and you get 20 premium movie channels.
