Flickchart Daily: Matchup of the Day & New Movies in Theaters
Flickchart Matchup of the Day
I think we can all agree that women jumping out of airplanes is simply delightful, so let’s check out two films with female parachutists :
Fathom vs. The Tarnished Angels
When most people hear the name Raquel Welch they automatically think of One Million Years B.C. and her cave girl bikini. It’s an iconic image and she is looking pretty good. I don’t dispute that. I do, however, want to let everyone know that the film does not have the final word on Raquel and swimwear. I would argue that her green bikini in Fathom deserves an equal amount of reverence, and that cave people are kind of gross. In Fathom Raquel can speak in complete sentences and her character has access to modern sanitation. Also, she is a trained dental assistant in addition to her parachuting skills. Welch’s Loana character in One Million Years B.C. can make no such claims.
Fathom as a whole isn’t as good as it should be, green bikini aside. Part of the problem is that Raquel doesn’t do all that much parachuting. If the film were made today, I’m sure there would be loads of slick parachute-centered action (I suggest Jessica Biel for the lead role if there is a remake). Back in 1967, when Fathom came out, I guess they assumed Raquel’s figure was diverting enough. Which is almost true. Here’s the trailer:

The parachutist in The Tarnished Angels is played by Dorothy Malone. Her husband, played by Robert Stack, is an obsessive pilot who performs in air shows. Rock Hudson is the passionate local reporter who wants to tell their story, and develops a hankering for Malone. She only parachutes once in the film, but it stands out more than any of Raquel’s parachuting scenes:

The Tarnished Angels is brought to us by Douglas Sirk, a director who knows how to milk the drama out every scene. If you’re interested in a Douglas Sirk double feature, pair The Tarnished Angels up with Written on the Wind. Malone, Stack and Hudson are all in that as well. (This is a long article discussing Sirk’s films for those who’d like some perspective on his work.)

SPECIAL BIRTHDAY RECOGNITION(S)
Maybe I’m the only person who finds this interesting, but Billy Zane and Marisa Mell were both born today. Why is that interesting? Because Zane was in the film CQ, which pays homage to Danger: Diabolik. Mell starred in Danger: Diabolik. Yeah, I know. Even though Mell passed on years ago, we still have the movie to remember her by:

If you haven’t seen CQ, it’s about an American film editor in 60s Paris. Jeremy Davies is the star. He gets stuck with finding an ending to the movie he’s working on after the director walks out. Zane is the “villain” in the movie Davies is struggling to complete, which is entitled Code Name: Dragonfly. It’s available as a short film separate from the feature if you want to check it out, but it’s best to watch CQ first. (NOTE: Dragonfly is played by model Angela Lindvall.)
