Good to see another MA/Specialist film fan on the site. You have a few Kung Fu oldies on your list that I've not even heard of. That's a rare feat indeed. Kudos on the Miike & New Tokyo Gore love also.
ToryK on 9/2/2012 Reply · Like · (0 likes)
Came here to say the same thing. Nice to have another guy like you around here. Now, it's not just Cleckley and me.What did you think of Secret Rivals, by the way? Hwang Jang Lee was a beast, as usual. But, I was nearly bored to tears by the rest of it.
UncleFok on 9/5/2012 Reply · Like · (0 likes)
Wow, the percentages here are whack. I wouldn't give Modern Times or City Lights a rating as low as 40/100.
Cleckley on 9/5/2012 Reply · Like · (1 like)
How d'you mean? The overall, aggregate win percentages for a movie? Or its relative positions on your chart? The win rate stat on the left hand side of movie profile pages are pretty useless, particularly for obscure movies. The percentages on your chart are only reflections of your own tastes and sequencing (assuming you've got your movies in an accurate order, of course). The whole "How you Should Rate..." thing is not entirely free from bullshit and is probably the biggest philosophical debate regarding the site's approach/functionality. The site assumes linearity, whereas most people rate/rank on a normal curve. So your median film gets a translated score of 5/10, but, on more traditional ranking/rating sites, would probably be rated by you as "Above Average", "B or B-", "6/10" or some variant.

Damn i see your a big fan of Kung Fu movies ive seen a few. Its a genre of its own but its not really my type of movie genre.
That's exactly right. If you have a relative paucity of movies, the site will tell you that certain movies that you may in fact enjoy are utter garbage (that is, if you've only rated a fraction of all the movies you've seen/remember). With a 100 movies the site will consider each movie 1% better than the movie below it, obviously. In my case the differential between one movie an the next is something like 0.04. My problem is that the differential is applied as a constant throughout my chart. I don't know that anyone will consider the difference between their favourite movie and their hundredth fav' movie to be the same is the difference between their thousandth fav' and eleven-hundredth fav'. I know there's a gulf in how much I enjoy Office Space (1) and, say, First Blood (102). The difference between National Treasure: The Book of Secrets (1,001) and Suicide Club (1,102) is virtually non-existent.So I guesss I disagree with the "picky" part. In fact, I sometimes think those stats are too forgiving. The films near both the top and ass ends of my chart should be considered more spread out, and the ones in the middle more condensed. According to the site Departures is a 7.1 movie for me. Yeah, it's an enjoyable film, but I, intuitively, would have graded it a 6ish. That doesn't necessarily make the site wrong, or even mean it's attempting to be "objective". In some ways, choosing between two movies rather than flat out scoring the movies individually is better for proponents of subjectivity. It's more implicit as the dude in The Social Network said.I don't agree with objectivity either. I enjoy Street Fighter more than most films so I put it in my Top 10. Even if we could measure objective quality, what would be the point? Troll 2 and Citizen Kane can be neighbours on my chart; how much I'm entertained is all that matters.Anyway, this all leads me to a question: Are you ranking only a certain type/grouping of the movies you've seen? Or have you just not gotten around to adding more movies? Because, for someone who has seen so many niche movies, you sure have ignored a lot of mainstream films.(But maybe your just being smart and getting a small number of movies in very good order before adding the rest one by one. Easier to get a more precise chart that way, but maybe less fun. Should've done that myself, but I added too many movie too quickly and couldn't be bothered to start again from scratch. Not that it matters all that much; time wasting efficiently and time-wasting inefficiently are both kooky concepts.)

Its about the enjoyment of a movie not how highly regarded it is by everyone.

Certainly. As long as you genuinely enjoy and appreciate a film, critical reception and objectivity really shouldn't matter.
UncleFok on 9/8/2012 Reply · Like · (3 likes)
Critics don't tend to get anything besides dramas and maybe the odd genre film directed by someone "important", anyway.

(lol u r so rite!!1)Yeah, I saw Hot Fuzz. Twice. First time, we had shitty seats that made my neck cramp. It was a very uncomfortable viewing. The second time, no one else saw it apparently, and I went anyway, figured we'd get better seats this time.Fell asleep about half way. Woke up every now and then. Eh. It made me appreciate Shaun of the Dead a lot more.

Firstly don't hate on Jumanji. Secondly, I think you should rank all movie. I rank all movies wether I love, hat or don't care about them. Bu of course I'm slightly obsessive compulsive.
Good to know. May I ask what the worst movie you've ever seen is?

Have you seen Lawrence of Arabia? On October 4th, most theaters around the States are showing a new remaster (from the original prints, apparently) exclusively on that date. I might go see it!
Ok. If you tell me you like Nightmare City I'm divorcing you.
They do. It is the absolute worst movie I have ever seen. I am convinced it plays on an endless loop in hell.
I'm iffy on Argento, but Susperia is Amazing. I feel like I've seen some Fulci but I can't recall any titles at the moment.
Yeah. He helped wright Once Upon a Time in the West and I think he produced Dawn of the Dead. Would you say that Italy is your favorite source of foreign cinema?
Agree. Japan is such a wealth of great film. And of course I love italy mostly because of Sergio Leone
Of course it is. If you like westerns I dont see why you wouldn't like it. Funny that you said "big" films. Lol. He only made 6
That's cool man. Do you go to the cinema a lot? Do you have any goof cinema houses where you live?

So, you're apregnantlesbian right?
Yessir. That's me.Actually stumbled across the name on IMDb; purely happenstance as I don't really spend much time there. Anyway the name registered immediately and upon further, Columbo-esque inspection (read a few reviews) it basically had to be you. The lexicon and syntax all but confirmed my suspicions and obviously I noticed the same taste in movies. Anyway, there's a lot of food for thought in those reviews and given how antithetical our perspectives are, despite having seen so many of the same under-represented movies, I will have to pick your brain about a few things.
Thanks, man. I appreciate that. Mostly I write in a stream of conciousness style so my scribblings might come across as nonsensical from the outside. Sometimes I let fly with the keystrokes on this site, but there aren't that many people worth engaging in dialogue. There's a handful of cats that I like to bounce ideas with.On that thought, I noticed in your reviews that "cynicism" is a running criticism of movies. Seems like you dislike movies that are "by design" or self-aware à la Fight Club, Zombieland and The Godfather. But you don't consider Scorsese (well Goodfellas at least) and Miike to be guilty of the same thing...? You consider them somehow more organic, maybe?
OneFuckTooMany on 11/6/2012 Reply · Like · (0 likes)
You're clearly much better versed on Miike than I am. I've seen Bizita Q, Audition, Gozu, Ichi the Killer, Crow Zero and Crows Zero 2, Sukiyaki Western Django, Thirteen Assassins, Imprint and some of Zebraman. There's an episode of The Simpsons where Moe defines "Post-Modern" (or "Po-Mo" as he put it) as "Weird for the sake of weird". That's how I sometimes feel about Miike, which is why I say his work is sort of manufactured. I like his weirdness though, because it's usually funny an unique. When we were kids we used to use the word "rago" when someone did something fucked up in school. I think the accepted meaning is "to not give a fuck about consequences", sort of the Nike "just do it" mentality. Sometimes I get that vibe from Miike, where he just seems to be doing whatever the fuck he feels like for no reason other than to please himself. That, I think, is the spontaneity you talk about, but I can't always tell when he's being rago and when he's being po-mo.So, I take it you throw The Godfather in with the other "Market" movies? Also, would you say Miike's Triad Trilogy is a s accessible as Ichi the Killer? (By that I mean do you think someone such as myself, who requires quick stimulation rather than build up, would find it enjoyable?) Which of the films would be the easiest to get into?
deadfilmriver on 11/7/2012 Reply · Like · (0 likes)
Do you mostly add movies one at a time, or do most of them actually show up for you in the versus? I must borrow your strategy so my list doesn't look like shit. Also, watching more movies would help a ton...

Drive wants to be 3!Nah, this rating system is weird. "IS IT BETTER THAN THIS MOVIE? Yes. IS IT BETTER THAN THIS MOVIE? I guess so. IS IT BETTER THAN THIS MOVIE? Nah." but it skips, like, 5 others movies in line. Oh well. I do really like Drive though.Hop on MSN!
Hey, I saw a video like this before! Oh, and they linked it in that video's page. Ha!
Unless two films that are similar in a certain way are coincidentally paired, I don't really see a reason to add to the discussions. It does happen often, so maybe I should...I don't feel smart enough to add my own critique to anything, though. Then again, most of the comments are really stupid and the opposite of insightful anyway, but I figured I'd leave it to the dum dums.
OneFuckTooMany on 11/10/2012 Reply · Like · (0 likes)
Ah. Best to leave the trilogy for another time then. No biggie, not as though there's a shortage of Miike out there and I'm still to get through the DoA trilogy.Ha, that "why not" is exactly the kind of thing that I like about Japanese movies in general. That wonderfully easy absurdness. Hell, even when they're attempting to be serious they manage to be absurd. It definitely helps that they often run against the grain of western conventions... like monogamy. Occidentals, man, we're a little silly with the way we love to indulge in seediness, but somehow still consider that Disney/Hallmark/death do us part crap to be an ideal worth hoisting up on a plinth. I wouldn't have thought you'd be a Lynch fan, not across the board at least. His movies are stretched out on my list. Mulholland is up top, Elephant Man was in that second tier (been a long time since I've seen it), Velvet's kinda average, Eraserhead is pretty bland and Dune is in limbo (where Lynch probably wants it to be). Even when he's good his films have an air of self-importance that I could do without. Like von Trier, Lynch always seems to be screaming "Look!!! I'm being artistic!!! That means something!!!"
OneFuckTooMany on 11/12/2012 Reply · Like · (0 likes)
"I'm too much of a realist to really agree with you on the monogamy thing (humans are wired for jealousy and crazy drama, I think) but I can see what you're saying."I'd say we also have a biological (and super-egotistical?) imperative to fuck everything (or every good-looking thing) in sight. Boning for the good of the species and all. In seriousness, I'm not really shrinking the merits of monogamy, just long-term monogamy. That one extreme is boring to me. The other, not so much.

You Mean like the free love hippies that became responsible, conformist squares in the 80's and 90s?Anyway, the kind of thoughtless rebellion you speak of is just as "One of us" as rank and file conformity of the mainstream, white bread world. "Yeah, but the same goes for literally any subculture." No, I get that. Just continuing down my anti-monogamy war path. =)I'm pretty much a narcissistic nihilist so (un-ironically) I have no interest in causes and ideals. I just like to make myself happy. Hedonism, I guess.
I mean the ists aren't really concious pursuits for me, just classifications. But yeah, movie talk soon.

Bet my Haven't Seen list is, like, 1000000 pages by now. It sucks when I definitely have seen a movie, but it's been so long ago or so lame that I can't remember shit, and it's not worth ranking, but I don't want to add it to the Haven't Seen list.Motherfuckin' Batman movies and other crapfests. But you like Drive though, right? Where Ryan Gosling stares for an eternity and into absurdity? (No man should be forced to stare at Mulligan for that long.)
That was Hendricks? Did not register at all, and I'm usually so good at recognising tits. Gah.So, if you were to give objectivity a shot (yeah, yeah, I smirk at it too) who would you say are the best *actors* working today?Leo, Bale, Norton, Cruise and Waltz would roughly be my full house. Off the top of my head, anyway.
Yep. That's the mother. Damn good in Django too. Similar role, but attenuated and more overtly comedic. I'd probably throw Tom Hardy in there too somewhere. You might actually like Hardy-Refn's Bronson, but I can't be firm gauging your tastes. I have occasionally off-kilter tastes (or off-kilter reasons for liking popular movies, I guess), but I think my tastes are discernible from the outside. Yours remain an enigma, at least partially.
Yup, no doubt. But I can run a checklist of your dislikes easily enough. Can't tether you to your likes without being vague. I don't know why that bothers me... gaps in my perspicacity or something. Jazz? Leave me alone. I have no need for culture. Bloody sophisticates.
Nyah, I was just joshing. Don't know a damn thing about Jazz. But yeah, any subaltern counter-cultural whatchamacallit/movement that gains popularity is bound to become more polished and less raw.
