"The middle third of The Deer Hunter > the first half of Apocalypse Now > the rest of TDH > the rest of AN. They both seem longer than they really need to be. With Apocalypse, I prefer the first half war movie to the second half horror movie. (The war half is still horrifying enough, and Willard’s madness at the beginning is more interesting to me than Kurtz’s at the end.) The Deer Hunter is a more personal story, which I appreciate more, but damn, it is too long. Some fat needed to be trimmed in the first and last thirds. Walken and Duvall are the best things about these movies."
