2018 movie #24: Venom. Meh. I don’t have a lot to say about it except it was not bad but nothing special and everything was just very weak (minus Tom Hardy who does try his best). 5/10.

Hmm... where to begin with this one... *SPOILERS AHOY*First off, I am a fan of the comic book character and pretty big fan of Marvel and some DC in general. I enjoy movies based on comic book superheros when done right. I am also a big fan of Ton Hardy, he's given some great and memorable performances both in film and television.Overall this film was a disappointment, not unforgivably bad, but not that good. Some of the likes: Tom Hardy was fine, with what he was given. When we actually got to the parts of the film with Venom, most were solid. Some dialogue landed.some of the gripes: The first act, or first 3rd of the film, or maybe he first 30 minutes... was so utterly boring it was hard to tell how long it was until something was entertaining. Of course they need to establish characters and set up the plot, I don't mind a slow build up normally, but this was just bad.The Villain was forgettable, all i can remember was that it was suppose to be Riot. The only differences between that symbiote and Venom was a slight change in color and some attacks, which pretty sure venom can also do but they made it seem like he was significantly weaker. We don't see much of any other symbiote. Some action scenes with Venom were a blurry mess and definitely felt like they held back on what he is capable of to tone down the violence. The love interest plot was in shambles, and very uninteresting. there were really no good supporting characters. Not including spiderman at all... was pretty foolish, not sure why SONY didn't just work with MCU on this one. I kinda expected this going in and all but still, no references or anything? My biggest gripe... worst teaser ever. to just come out flat and say his name, so lame. Such a big anticipated villain and you are starting him off so very wrong... not even sure i like who they cast for the role, no offense he is a solid actor... just think they could have made a better choice to play someone so insane and ruthless...sigh, so yeah... a disappointment but not utterly intolerable. However i think if i watched it again I would probably like it even less. The let down is comparable to Suicide Squad, where there is so much potential squandered, but Venom is still better than that PoS.\

Every bit as generic and the “throwback mindless movie” most of the critics label it as. It really does feel like a first generation comic book adaptation movie along the lines of Fantastic Four. Same shallow characterization and shallow everything for that matter. (Even the scene with the fiancé felt exactly like the dumb instance were the FF’s Ben Grimm has his girl hand him his ring and break up with him) The villain is nonsensical and Michelle Williams’ character is asininely dumb and ridiculous. Frankly, the Fantastic Four had more heart. Venom has better effects and more interesting action, however. In an age where CBM has come so far, it feels off when a movie hits at the level of an FF and reaches for the lowest common denominator. Absolutely cartoonish characters neutered this movie but there is potential here and there is some fun to be had watching it if you turn your brain completely off.

Tom Hardy's clearly having fun as Eddie Brock, but the movie isn't. It's not terrible, but it IS really hard to remember any redeeming moments or sequences. Mediocre in every sense of the word. 5/10

This could be the most inane Marvel movie put on the screen.
