Shockingly disappointed. This WWI documentary using actual footage re-mastered by Peter Jackson and crew really fails to register. It’s 2 hours of firsthand voice over rambling in broken English about grim on the ground events of the war. The first 20 minutes or so is the old black and white footage we all know. That start is mind-numbingly dull as they set up the conflict footage. Then, the re-mastered and computer enhanced stuff kicks in and it’s amazing to look at in 3D. For a while, it’s fascinating. It really is grim and tears at the soul to see that kind of war up close. Unfortunately given that there is no story or no context, the entire effort lapses in to wave after wave of the same thing. It’s tedious and once you’ve seen 15 minutes you’ve seen it all.
