The problem with this movie is tone and pacing. At times this is an overly melodramatic drama, and then at other times it is a quirky comedy. The film works best as a comedy, in its keen observations of Americana. The dramatic side of the story really lulls on in preachy overtones. There are some good moments in this movie. I loved the parallelism between Soviet Russia and the USA. But that last all but five minutes. I think this would have been a much better movie if they would have focused on the 'fish out of water' story, at least that would have suited Williams better.
