When a movie ranks as high as it does, it means that the vast majority of Flickchart's users believe that the film is AT LEAST "pretty good". The Dark Knight has an 80% win percentage. It takes down 8 out of 10 of ALL MOVIES it comes up against. From ALL USERS. People can cry about films being overrated all they want. I'm sure most people have films they think are "overrated". Doesn't mean that they are. The stats speak for themselves: The Dark Knight is rated exactly as it should be. Perhaps given another year or two, it will drop in the rankings. (Maybe after The Dark Knight Rises comes out...)

Give it a break-the Dark Knight is just a little superior to Batman Begins. However, TDK practically says that the Joker wins in the end and that shouldn't have happened.

I think the best way to address this movie being at number one is that it does seem to be the most popular movie. However, that doesn't make it the best. It has to stand the test of time before it tops any of those lists.

It doesn't really matter to me where this falls on the global charts. If a majority of the userbase here has this film ranked high, it makes sense for it to be ranked high. I liked this film quite a bit, but had some serious issues with the chaotic editing during action sequences that wasn't very spatially coherent (a similar gripe with Batman Begins) and some pacing issues.

How the hell is a movie that has been seen by 91 percent of the user base, and wins 80 percent of its match-ups (The Dark Knight), ranked below a film that has been seen by 24 percent of the user base, and wins just over 50 percent of its match ups (Double Indemnity)?

Did Flickhart completely change the way it calculates its overall user rankings? Did they not like that two comic book movies were sitting pretty at the top of their lists?

A bland, dumb-as-bricks film from start to finish. An uninteresting, one dimensional cliche hero, shoehorned attempts at emotion (killing a poorly written damsel in distress) and one of the dumbest plot twists in the history of cinema (element in the diorama) make this a failed attempt by nolan to get me invested in anything that "rises." Time for another reboot already?

What kind of pathetic idiot would just copy a quote bashing the godawful Iron Man 2 and paste it on this board? Look, you didn't even change the "element in the diorama" statement, making your entire "rant" null and void.

The Dark Knight still stands tall as the greatest comic book film ever associated with the genre. An emotionally gripping drama, a flawless character study of a brilliant psychopath; a smartly constructed crime epic; a crisply shot, high octane, adrenaline-pumping action film; a thrilling adventure piece; a deep, spiritual, richly complex study of the nuanced intricacies of morality and what one must do to achieve what one perceives as the greater good. Combined with bits of witty, subtle and dark humor that never overstay their welcome.

All constructed within a film that is so Shakespearean, it even follows his classic 5 act tragedy structure. Truly a film that stands shoulder-to-shoulder with the absolute best works of Kurosawa, Kubrick and Hitchcock and the Bard himself.

0 people liked this  √

Crapbaskets123

Crapbaskets123 on 8/9/2022 Reply  ·

As a psychopath, Ledger's Joker isn't even the best written one I've seen. That honor goes to Anton Chigurh and John Doe. But I agree that it's a smartly constructed crime thriller masterpiece with gritty action, crisp and immersive cinematography (which also implements the themes of the story as well, so that's also great). As for being a deep and spiritual piece...what? There is literally nothing spiritual about this movie. You want a spiritual movie, watch Empire Strikes Back. But yeah, it's a very complex movie about human nature and the types of people we can become given the right circumstances.

As for the whole shakespearean thing, I'm pretty sure this movie only follows three acts. The thing is, it has two different plot lines. Harvey's story, and the main story with Joker and Batman. Hence why it seems that it's a 5 act structure.

As for it being on the same level as the best of Kurosawa, Kubrick, and Hitchcock. I personally have their best in my top 10, TDK is in my top 30. But I can understand why someone would have this on that level. I just personally wouldn't

Heath Ledger's performance is great but I wouldn't say that it was one of the best EVER. The writing had more of a contribution to his character than his acting. There weren't any plot holes I found in the movie and it is a perfect movie within the genre of a crime drama and comic book category.

This is also definitely Nolan's best movie. His second best is Memento which isn't as good as this.

I would say that it was a little overrated though.

Not saying I disagree that it's the only CBM that should be on any top 100 list, but that list has Mad Max: Fury Road above Inception, TDK, and Memento, so the list has issues

Can't agree more! Even though I barely prefer Endgame (it's just personal favoritism or enjoyability; I definitely don't think Endgame is one of the greats or even close; 7 or 8/10 at most in terms of quality), The Dark Knight is just an incredible masterpiece!

Yeah, I know many people believe that right now. It's just that for me, despite its evident flaws, it was extremely enjoyable (I have a difference between quality and favoritism/enjoyability; The Dark Knight is the superior film in terms of quality by far, but I enjoyed Endgame a smidge more), but I hope we can at least respect each other's opinions :)

It's NOT overrated as some haters claim. Definitely a top 5 movie of all time, up there with Pulp Fiction, The Empire Strikes Back, and The Godfather Part II. All of the performances are great (except maybe Maggie's) the plot is great, and not cliche and predictable like most superhero movies. Zimmer and Newton Howards score is outstanding. Aaron Eckchart and Gary Oldman were both fantastic as well. And of course, Heath Ledgers performance as Joker was one of the greatest performances ever put to film.

Definitely not a top 5 films movie. That's gotta be a joke. I mean, there are slight issues that are there in the film. The editing has moments that kinda suck, the cinematography has certain scenes that aren't very good, Rachel's character gets devolves into a typical love interest whose only role is to die and instigate Harvey's arc, the music has moments of not being used that well. Of course, those are mostly just minor nitpicks, but they're issues that keep it from being in the top 20, much less the top 10.

I wouldn't put it anywhere near The Godfather or Pulp Fiction considering that they're better in basically every way. Editing, cinematography, storytelling, etc. Honestly, the only thing TDK does better is in the entertainment factor, and even that's subjective.

I would say TDK is a top 50 movie, but not a top 5 or top 10 films movie

Ok, I realize how highly ranked and appreciated this film is from both critics and public but for me, when I think of Batman, I think of the 1989 Batman with Michael Keaton and Jack Nicholson. This one is more syphisticated and does take it to the next level. Just the 1989 is the ultimate Batman for me.

This film is fucking awesome. Idk if I'd say it's a masterpiece because of some minor issues I have with the film on a technical level, but the plot of intricately and expertly constructed, most of the characters feel unique and have their own bit of screen presence (most notably Ledger's Joker), the movie is perfectly paced, etc.

Either the best or second best CBM ever.
