Amazingly good hidden gem. One of the best sci-fi actioners I’ve seen in years.

It's like someone put Robocop, Death Wish, John Wick, and Black Mirror into a grindhouse blender in the best way.

In the future, whenever I’m asked to name what would have been a good film that was ruined by the ending THIS movie is going to get mentioned. An awful ending to what was an interesting ride. The premise was intriguing and execution was damn good given the smaller budget. Yet, everything falls apart in the third act. The morbid ending seems to have always been in place but it’s like they ran out of money and shifted to a fast conclusion. The final showdown with the main henchmen was flat out lame. Add a genuinely unsatisfying twist and the last 15 minutes of this movie ruins EVERYTHING that came before it. Ultimately, I have no desire to ever watch this thing ever again.

I disagree. I thought the ending was one of the best parts of the movie. It was cold and rather disturbing. Grey got his happy ending and so did Stem; even if Stem’s wasn’t morally correct. Grey wanted to be reunited with his wife and Stem wanted a host body to wreak havoc in. The ending also suits the movie’s theme. What’s the dangers when technology takes control of our lives? Is the fake world more safe than the real world? Lame? Unsatisying? Are you sure you didn’t see an alternative ending?

Exactly my sort of warped, pulpy sci-fi with a sharp take and an oddly charming tone. Amazing music, excellent performance by Logan Marshall-Green. Loved it.

That was a genuinely enjoyable ride. Fantastic acting across the board. Wonderfully dark world. Some really nice world building. Absolutely loved this movie

I can see a few similarities to Ex Machina.

2018 movie #22: Upgrade. The story is pretty weak and it takes about 30 minutes before it gets anywhere. But damn, the action and filmmaking on display is brilliant and it’s worth the price of admission alone. I also love the messages of this movie. It’s like Ex Machina but more action focused. 6/10.
