There are some very powerful visuals and solid writing as well as some clumsier attempts from first time feature film director, Melina Matsoukas. But the film's beginning and end worked really well and the performances and chemistry of Kaluuya and Smith are really strong. Now if they'd only cleaned up the middle bits then this could have been one of the greats. Alas, the end result is mostly subpar and leaves this one much further down the list for this genre.
