I don't love The Friends of Eddie Coyle, but it shows that there is a very different way to make a mobster movies than the typical path the The Departed chooses, and it's a hell of a lot more interesting as a result.

The Departed suffers from the deliberate use of Jack Nicholson. The Friends of Eddie Coyle doesn't have a bad actor in the cast, and shows the world of crime and law enforcement as a dreary, tiresome place to be - much less to belong to.
