It was not as bad as everyone said. I guess if you were a hardcore episode 4,5,6 fan then maybe it seemed that way. But the fact is, the movie was entertaining and I liked the focus on jedi instead of politics and organized rebellion.

Sin City. It was better in my opinion.

I completely agree with Lioncage. I guess I'm what you call a "new" fan of the Star Wars saga, and I enjoyed all of them. I do think Episode 1 is the weakest of the bunch, but I still enjoyed it immensely. More than Sin City, actually.

Phantom Menace is not as bad as everyone says but I still prefer Sin City in this match up.

There are a variety of levels on which a person could evaluate The Phantom Menace. For example, on a very broad level they could say "I like movies with Jedis in them." Or, they could narrow it down a bit and say "I like movies with Jedis in them who duel it out with a Sith who uses a cool double-bladed lightsaber." Or, they could narrow it even further and say "I like movies with Jedis in them who duel it out with a Sith who uses a cool double-bladed lightsaber, and also that tell a a coherent story and that isn't filled with a bunch of stupid slapstick and lousy acting and actually has dramatically compelling characters and..." Oh, wait. Anybody who defends The Phantom Menace isn't likely taking their evaluation too far past the first two levels. I'm not a big Star Wars fan. However, I do like movies that aren't shit. To not perceive Phantom Menace as shit requires an exceedingly lax criteria for what constitutes a "not shitty" movie. I admit that that I allow certain critical issues to slide when a movie contains stuff that I favor, but I'd like to think I can get a little further than the "cool double-bladed lightsaber" level. Oh, yeah, Sin City is better.
