Wow, this is tough. I love both films, despite the fact that they're almost entirely different. Rambo III is a mindless action flick with lots of (unintentional) humour and some great lines; Rambo, on the other hand, is much more serious and sometimes hard to swallow. No doubt that the fourth film features a higher quality in terms of art, but I think I'll go with the third one because it is just more fun.

Both are exceedingly dumb films, but Rambo 4 has some truly unique violence that distinguishes it from the general brainlessness of the franchise.

Distasteful violence vs dumb entertainment. Hmm... Every film in the Rambo trilogy beats Rambo (2008)!
