Two movies - each their own homage to a different time of heroism of the pulp or comic variety. While I give credit to The Rocketeer for being an original idea of late comic artist Dave Stevens, something about the execution of bringing the story to life fell short for me. I remember being blown away by the original images promoting the movie, and what young boy's mind wouldn't be blown not only by the thought of inheriting the power of personal flight, but doing so with the aid of a jet pack?! The New Frontier, didn't have to make quite as far a jump as The Rocketeer did, mainly because the animated medium is so close to the comic book medium where The New Frontier was born as a comic book series by Darwyn Cooke. DC Comics and Warner Bros. animation all but nailed the adaptation and used every tool in their arsenal to bring the story to life. The difference was having an extra 17 years of advancements in equipment, animation tools, computer imaging and special effects. Had The Rocketeer had these advantages, a different movie might be on top.
