Emma vs. Emma

Emma showdown! I've always favored the TV version for Andrew Davies's superbly crafted script.

Hmmm, difficulties. The Paltrow version is far more whimsical and, by extension, less inflated with sudden and unnecessary injections of emotion. In fact, the Beckinsale version offers up no hint of jocularity until the introduction of the Frank Churchill character. Speaking of Churchill, I've always felt Austen deals with him unjustly; he doesn't do anything wrong per se, but Austen has an aversion to supreme charmers and decides to admonish him/them to make her point. I think the Beckinsale version, with it's more amiable ending, gives him a little redemption. Kate Beckinsale, the fucking babe that she is, should be superior to the usually boring Paltrow, but Paltrow, again, had more whimsy here. I think that settles it. On a creepier not, it's a little sick that Knightley says shit like "I held you in my arms when you were a baby and now, baby girl, I so wanna fuck you in the ass". Doesn't matter, Austen's stories are trashy and gleefully schoolgirlish, but she still gives my brain a boner with her musical language.
