Oh god, this is difficult. I absolutely love the original Day the Earth Stood Still, but I also like 2001: A Space Odyssey. I have mixed feelings about 2001 (if you can look up the review by Confused Matthew who made a 3 part review stating why he thought it was terrible). I think the Jupiter Mission segment was so great and well written that it made up for the rest of the slightly disappointing film (Whenever I rewatch it I always skip to that part). However, I must say that Kubrick was very creative with the cinematography. The film is STUNNING to look at and most of it looks much more real than any crappy CGI effect will ever look. But, he sometimes overdoes it, which results in unnecessarily long scenes of stuff happening. In the end, I would rather watch The Day the Earth Stood Still over and over much more than 2001. Sorry Mr. Kubrick.

Oh, I wish I could take back some of what I just said back. A couple weeks ago, a friend of mine sat down with me and made me watch 2001 again; as we watched, he explained some of the elements of 2001 that I didn't understand at first. To be totally honest, I haven't watched it all the way through for 5 years (the Confused Matthew review backed up my problems with the film when I was 10), and that was probably the reason I didn't put any effort into extracting meaning from some of the things that happen throughout the film. I still think that you could have cut some of the film (the Jupiter and Beyond the Infinite scene always made me mad because the Star Gate sequence should have been cut after 5 minutes because it starts to become meaningless and irrelevant to the story). I would like to apologize for insulting the intelligence of anybody who is reading. Even though I say all this, I like The Day The Earth Stood Still just a tad better. As I said before, sorry Mr. Kubrick.
