Tough match-up. I wouldn't say either of these films is unknown, but neither is seen as widely as it deserves. I find "The Piano" a bit melodramatic, so focused on its message that it sacrifices some historical accuracy which would give it more validity. "Midnight Express" is so harrowing because of its truthfulness.
