Skyfall vs. Goldfinger

Skyfall is very, very good. So good, in fact, that I can pick it over Goldfinger without any hesitation at all. Sam Mendes is the first Oscar-winning director to direct a Bond film and the quality really shows; the man does a masterful job. It is a pretty stunning improvement over the embarrassing work his immediate predecessor, Marc Forster, did on Quantum of Solace. Javier Bardem is also quite good as the main villain, another big improvement on a Quantum of Solace weak point. It was great seeing (excuse my spoilers) the reintroductions of Q and Miss Moneypenny and the new (and, in my opinion, improved) M. All that said, the movie isn't perfect. The Home Alone-esque finale wasn't very good, nor was Bardem's character's death. But I'd call these relatively minor quibbles for a movie that, on the whole, delivers the goods in a big way.

Goldfinger is the Citizen Kane of Bond movies. It set the standard for future Bond movies. It isn't perfect, but no Bond movie is, really (some might say Casino Royale, but I disagree). Skyfall is more like the Dark Knight of Bond movies. It's so much more than just an simple, entertaining Bond movie (one of the reasons I like it more than Casino Royale). It's a character study, it's a showcase for great acting, directing and beautiful cinematography, it has a couple of moral dilemmas and it has a threat that actually is very relevant (Anonymous, anyone?). Because of this, not only is it my favorite in the franchise, it's also one of the 'un-Bondiest' yet. It's not so much a James Bond movie as it is a movie about James Bond. Yeah, you have Q, Moneypenny and some gadgets back, but the tone is much more influential (if that makes sense). Again, ofcourse it isn't perfect, but wow is it good.

Skyfall for me as well, but Goldfinger is very close behind.

SKYFALL excited me more, but every time I try to think of a reason not to pick GOLDFINGER, I come up short.

2 bests Bond movies. I prefer Goldfinger

Goldfinger is good. Skyfall is better.

Goldfinger all the way.
