Alien is one of the greatest science fiction movies ever made and it takes the crown here. Prometheus is a spectacular return to Ridley Scott and H.R. Geiger's intergalactic universe first seen by audiences in 1979, but it simply cannot top the original.
Prometheus packs a more punch with action and great CGI sequences like when the ship is falling at the end. That was great. But Alien started it all.
Prometheus has far too many flaws to be put in the same realm of greatness that Alien stands in.

Without Alien there would be no Prometheus. So Alien wins. That said though, I would preferably watch Prometheus just to see Fassbender whose performance is outstanding.
I'm going with Prometheus. Ready your pitchforks.

Prometheus is a convoluted mess with some poor writing, whereas Alien is a pretty straightforward but highly effective horror film. I don't despise Prometheus, I'd give it a 4-5 out of ten but Alien is a 9. No contest.

Alien is fantastic as a horror movie with sci-fi elements, whereas Prometheus really feels like honest science fiction. They both are visual marvels, with superb pacing and moments of absolute terror. I have to give this one to Alien, though, for its place in history and its breathtaking artistry. I definitely prefer Prometheus to the last 3 Alien movies I saw!

I mean Alien is haunted house movie, straight up. Maybe the greatest haunted house movie ever, it is perfect for what it attempts to do. It's amazing. Prometheus is just as amazing because of what it tries to do. It tries to ask questions and be stimulating, and it does that at an excellent rate.

Prometheus definately had the best peformance by Fassbender, I'm actually, AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. But that scene in Alien when the android goes crazy, that was creepy, but then the alien ship crashing at the end of Prometheus, that was awesome. Hell, i'm sayin Prometheus and goin to the Prometheus side with Reelz
I like 'em both, but am still going to have to side with the original.

There's an elegant simplicity to Alien that is completely absent from Prometheus, which seems to be trying to do too many things. At the same time, I sort of like that it does try to be more than your standard haunted house flick set in space, that it does ask those questions -- although the answers it comes up with, such as they are, are unsatisfactory to say the least. For me the biggest edge Prometheus has over Alien is the cast of characters. Elizabeth Shaw isn't half as awesome as Ripley, but David actually beats out Ash in the intriguing android department, and Weyland, Vickers, and the captain are interesting characters in their own right. Name me five characters in Alien you cared about one way or another. Still, I've got to give it to the original for the Alien's design, Sigourney Weaver's butt-kicking heroine, and that creepy, creepy setting.
Alien for all the reasons which other people have listed. But I still really enjoyed Prometheus, and it doesn't deserve the panning which it has received from the punters. Just stop Damon Lindelof from ever writing again and we should be alright.
As per usual, I agree with smatticus. Prometheus was a completely enjoyable experience. Is it Alien? Of course not...but it looked great in 3-D, and I was thoroughly entertained for my two hours in the theater.

Definitely Prometheus over the original Alien on my opinion. "Reelz" already asked you guys to ready your pitchforks,so i guess everybody here is prepared: Yeah,Alien started it all,and without no doubt, it was VERY ahead of its time. A Sci-Fi godfather,a genre Definer,i agree with all that. But it REALLY doesn't captivate me like Prometheus did. Ripley is kick-ass and there's no match for a cult character like her,but when it comes to the WHOLE crew except her,i really didn't care. The Alien scenes also didn't aged well, and despite the fact it was the early 80's, i bet everybody here can name Sci-Fi movies in the same era that aren't the case.It just happens sometimes. The "Alien" plot was pretty regular too,"A Haunted House Movie" was a great analogy for it. But hey,i understand: the Nostalgia/Importance of the original makes up for it,i can dig that. For me,"Prometheus" was the best Ridley Scott Sci-Fi comeback i could wish for,and the acting in this movie was superb when it comes to Rapace/Theron and my,oh my, Fassbender as David...that was EPIC!
Anyone who is a fan of the Alien franchise will surly say Alien is better. Prometheus was a huge disappointment. Alien wins.

Sheets's typo is ironically amusing ... he and some of the other Alien fans are surEly getting a bit too surly!

Haha @nclysander, Prometheus wins

This is a hard one. Especially since I've grown up with ALIEN and seen it countless times. But PROMETHEUS really upped the ante in the intellectual department. Whereas ALIEN benefits from being small-scale and focused, PROMETHEUS aims higher than any science fiction film I've seen since... 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY? It's a masterpiece, one that will take a while to be accepted, but a masterpiece nonetheless.

While I enjoyed Prometheus, it in no way can measure to the genius and dominance of Alien. 1979 is where it all started.
Alien, Prometheus is good and sadly and unfairly maligned but Alien is a top twenty film for me so that gets the nod

Alien by far. It was more original of the time it came out.

You know What !? Both of them are cool in their own way - i don t care what people say about prometheus i enjoyed it and i thaught it was the coolest sci fi of 2012. But i got to go with Alien .

It's the same movie, guys! Set aside the pretense of Prometheus, and Scott rebooted the franchise he started! I'd say they're roughly equal in entertainment value for me. Alien has the advantage of being a classic and standing up well 30 years later.
Alien
Y'know, I don't know. Alien has kind of bullshit scares (slooooooooow build-up -> it's just the cat; no build-up at all -> holy shit an alien!). I guess the scares work, but I can't help but feel pissed off after them.Prometheus on the other hand has bullshit logic and character motivations ("Dead aliens are scary!" -> "Aww, look at that cute alien snake...imma go touch it"). Keep in mind that I still like these movies. Alien has a fantastic atmosphere and great sets. Same goes for Prometheus, except that movie has beautiful imagery. I'm kind of with consp77 on this one; they're almost the exact same movie, at least structure-wise. Team gets stuck on planet, they go explore, something goes wrong, they return to the ship, there is a problem with one or two people, the alien(s) attack, the android turns out to be evil, etc. etc. Prometheus is ultimately the more flawed of the two, but also the more entertaining. That's what counts, at least for me.

Originally, I liked Prometheus more after I came out of the theaters. After rewatch, I reverted back to Alien. I really feel like Prometheus was a stepping stone to a sequel, which is ultimately the film Ridley Scott wants to make. My own opinion of course...

Porn movies have better plot and better acting than Pornotheus. By far.

Prometheus is a great movie , you people did not understand this movie like people back in 1979 when they ve seen alien for the first Time . This sci fi mystery movie leaves you with unanswered questions and makes you think . Comparing this to a porno is stupid and pointless.

It's not a word I throw around lightly, but Prometheus deserves it: pretentious. It's the one HUGE characteristic that separates these two films. The whole thing reeks of self-indulgence and pseudo-intellectualism. I'd even be more willing to accept it had it the guts to stick with it to the end, but it opts to have people hop, skip and jump away from giant spaceship-boulders instead. It looks great, it sounds great, the cast do good work... but it is painfully, eye-rollingly pretentious and a pretty film doesn't get away with that in my book.
