I like American indie films, but these two I do not warm to. Both wallow in the comedy of social embarrassment to no great effect. Ultimately both wind up with feel-good(ish) moments allowing the outsiders to triumph in arenas that would like to exclude them. But their victories are hollow, cliched and stamped with the Hollywood seal of a morally-upstanding message. The only category I can separate them on is weirdness, which Napoleon Dynamite wins.
Although Napoleon Dynamite was SWEET I prefer the interactions of the family in Little Miss Sunshine. Both these films are comic gems.

That is a very good point. Little Miss Sunshine did seem to appeal to dysfunctional nature of families in the style of a independent film which is contrary to what it was. But at the very least there is a movie like that in a Hollywood film. I wouldn't be able to stand a Hollywood where they just came out with stuff like Transformers and Clash of the Titans. Little Miss Sunshine is proof that Hollywood is not incompetent of making genuine films.
