Blair Witch had such an impact on me because it's the first time I can ever remember seeing a psycho-drama horror that looked so real you couldn't escape the feeling this was happening in real time. That oppressive dread sunk me in my seat and I even caught myself wondering if I would escape the theater alive. As an adult it's fun to have these kind of loss of reality experiences we only knew as children, before we get too jaded with information. The Evil Dead doesn't really provide the same jolts, but how can it compare? It is one of the scariest movies ever made though, and while it doesn't have the technical fireworks and eclecticism of the sequels Evil Dead 2: Dead By Dawn and Army of Darkness, it is the best of the trilogy by far. Wow, great movies. Both are low budget, but both made such a huge impact. But I think out of the two, The Evil Dead is still looked back and with a greater artistic appreciation, while Blair Witch was more technical.
