The Martian vs. Alien

This may be somewhat controversial but I actually enjoyed The Martian significantly more than I did for Alien. Alien creates a great world, but it kinda takes too long to get going.

I couldn't agree more with alphahawk. Alien is great, but moves a little too slow for me. However, I was never bored at all during The Martian.

Martian was great and all, but it doesn't stand a chance here.

The Martian beats Alien hands down!

Anybody else notice how similar the opening shots of these two films are?

Whoa, Alien's getting dominated here.

folks, come on...this is isn't even a conversation.

What the hell's going on here? The Martian is fun and all, but I really don't understand the hype it's been getting. Alien is by far Ridley Scott's best film and a masterpiece of cinema.

Argh, this is genuinely hard. Alien is a masterclass of tension and classic sci-fi/horror, but The Martian is one of the most fully-formed and entertaining films in recent years. However, I think The Martian is too new to know how its going to be seen in 20-30 years, which I think gives Alien the edge. The Martian might become a classic. Alien IS a classic.

This is a tougher match up than it should be. Ridley Scott's two best films, well, I haven't seen Blade Runner. The Martian is one of my favourite movies in recent memory. The casting is great, there's good tension in NASA trying to bring Matt home and the sets, locations and visuals were beautiful. But seriously, Alien is one of the only Science Fiction masterpieces! Every I said about The Martian is what Alien done masterfully! The casting is perfect, it has tension and an atmosphere like no other film and it's visually brilliant, even 38 years after! Maybe in 38 years time I may look at The Martian as I look at Alien today but for now, Alien wins!

Alien is first-rate Ridley on god mode, while The Martian is third-rate Ridley with a bad case of diarhoea.

If this was Aliens this would be a different story, but for now The Martian's wit gets the edge over Alien slow pacing

I've now seen Blade Runner and, yeah, I still think Alien and The Martian are his two best films!

Alien is vastly superior than The Martian. The Martian was overrated, like, it was formulaic and predictable. Both movies were conventional, however, Alien was unpredictable comparative to The Martian's Apollo 13 meets Cast Away amalgamation. Plus, Alien had more of an involving story. I still enjoyed both, but Alien is just vastly superior.
