The Tale of Princess Kaguya vs. The Wind Rises

Miyazaki's last and Takahata's last. Takahata takes it, that hand-drawn, roughly-lined animation enlivening Japan's classic fairytale is hard to beat, even for Miyazaki's most personal film.

I felt like Princess Kaguya was truly a misstep. The first I've watched out of Ghibli's output. It's pretty, but I felt like its story was too distant and not really emotionally investing. Shortly, it's very clichéd. The Wind Rises is far from one of my favourite Ghibli or even Miyazaki movies, but actually I felt like it quite worked. Not as good as Grave of the Fireflies, but still captivating in its own way and much more interesting than Kaguya.
