Under da sea? Eh, The Little Mermaid had a better story to it.

Ponyo is essentially Miyazaki's take on the Japanese version of the same folktale. Even though Ponyo has the Miyazaki visual flair, TLM is populated with far more endearing characters [and music].

Yeah, Ponyo was just tooo cutesy. At least TLM had some bite and dark to it. (Yes I'm using dark as a noun here... I think.)

The Little Mermaid was fine, but Ponyo was better. I'd even say the music was better. The most commendable thing about Ponyo is the relationship between Ponyo and Fujimoto compared to that of Triton and Ariel. Triton is one-dimensional, whereas Fujimoto encompasses real humanity and eventual heartbreak that makes Ponyo something more than the jumping through hoops musical that's The Little Mermaid. The animation is stunning too, Ponyo's escape is everything Ariels' wasn't, full of hope, magic, and energetic enthusiasm that causes the ocean itself to bow.
So, it's better because its' even more cliched than a Disney film? Damn.

Nineteen year dif and it's from japan with tina and matt voicing it. Kind of unfair.

The Little Mermaid....good.

Ponyo was nice, but it's probably my least favorite Miyazaki film. It was very light and left me feeling underwhelmed. The Little Mermaid is just a really great Disney film...so it wins.

Ponyo is gorgeous but very simple. The Little Mermaid has more depth. They're both very good films though.

Ponyo is better.
