Two movies deeply informed about the aftermath of the war. The Ozu, of course, knows about the dramatic economic recovery and its subtle social effects, while the Kurosawa is looking ahead to a deferred social reckoning and a restoration and continuation of an intellectual tradition. I'll give it to Ozu's career capstone this time.
