Mask vs. Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon

For crying out loud. I haven't seen Mask in years, but I feel like I need to say something about this matchup. Or, at least capture it for some future Flickcharter to comment intelligently on it. Anyway, I probably watched Mask on cable dozens of times as a kid, and I'm not entirely sure why. I think it was one of those absolutely neutral entertainment experiences that passed the time, but didn't require much effort on my part as a viewer. The story, about a young man with a severe facial deformity, was kind of inspirational and I might've had a small crush on Cher, who plays his biker mom. Behind the Mask is like a course on the all the clichés and symbolism associated with the Slasher genre, which is interesting and amusing up to a point. It's a lot like Man Bites Dog, but not quite as entertaining. Maybe I'm just tired of self-aware horror movies. Mask wins because I have no significant negative feelings toward it.
