This is truly a touch call

two of the defining films from the '70s. Taxi Driver is darker and more powerful I think, but Chinatown is more perfect.

Two influential movies from my formative movie watching days. I would say Taxi Driver colored my taste in movies considerably more than Chinatown, though. Chinatown is really entertaining, but Taxi Driver altered my whole outlook.

"Forget it, Jake. It's Chinatown."

Taxi Driver it is.

I re-watched Chinatown and loved it just as much as the first time. It just oozes style and Nicholson is on top form, but Taxi Driver is... Taxi Driver. It gets the win here.

From the acting, to the directing, to the editing (in terms of writing, they're about even), Taxi Driver is just a superior film.

Taxi Driver murders Chinatown.

Taxi Driver is more purposeful. I don't really dig layers and layers of mystery when they're less about pointing to something greater and more about making you go "all these mysteries sure are mysterious!"
