This is an almost impossible choice!

Both awesome movies but The Matrix filled the void in my movie heart created only months earlier by Episode 1. In a few years I'd probably pick TDK but it hasn't served it's time yet.

The Matrix. Duh.
Both classic genre films, wonderfully shot, philosophically challenging, and brilliantly realized. My heart tells me to vote for The Matrix, but my head reminds me that the acting and the writing was arguably better in The Dark Knight.

This is no contest for me. I love The Matrix. It's incredibly cool. But The Dark Knight is frikkin' BRILLIANT.
on 8/18/2009
Yeah, I prefer Dark Knight without any hesitation. I'm all about the characters, and no one in the Matrix is as engaging to me as Ledger's Joker.

Dark Knight was one of the best crime film but the Matrix was unique...a fusion of sci fi action and thought provoking philosophy

This is rough. Matrix vs. Dark Knight? My favorite movie of 2008 vs. one of my favorites of all time. The Matrix is more influential...um. Can I make it a tie?

I wasn't a real movie fan when The Matrix came out, I therefor did not experience the buildup which I did expirience before The Dark Knight. It might be the nostalgic effect, but ultimately I think I prefer TDK.

This is pretty much an impossible choice for me. I love them both. Both are well directed. Both are thought provoking. Both are pretty original.

There's no way anyone could answer this. "It's a trap!"
on 10/29/2009
TDK was really cool, but The Matrix is more epic

Neither one is lacking in action. The Dark Knight is Batman, however, and contains Heath Ledger's tremendous swan song.

an impossible choice

These movies are both best appreciated at the moment they were made. THE MATRIX already looks pretty silly (to me, at least) and as fun was THE DARK KNIGHT was, it will only age slightly better. For now, I prefer THE DARK KNIGHT -- it had a little more to say beyond THE MATRIX's crappy Messianic references and stilted dialogue delivered by wooden actors. Oh, and the Wachowskis are a bunch of fucking plagiarists who should have their cameras taken away and locked up.

I liked The Dark Knight alot, but it is the most overrated film of the past decade.
on 2/15/2010
If it wasn't for keanu reeves and heath ledger's joker, I probably would have gone with the matrix.

The Matrix is to my generation what star wars must have been to those back in the 70's, it was a huge moment in movie history. while The Dark Knight was a dream come true to the Batman fan in me (and so was begins) this is so hard....

My vote goes to the Matrix. A much more complete and actual movie.

Gotta go with The Matrix. People seem to forget just how jaw-dropping both the effects AND the plot twists were in The Matrix, and it seemed to contain a whole lot bunch of moments of shear kinetic excitement (lobby gun-fight, anyone?) that the Dark Knight lacked (for me, at least). Also, the Dark Knight makes me want to eat a bullet after watching it; fantastically executed, but about as uplifting as a puppy holocaust.

Matrix FTW.
on 4/20/2010
I guess the novelty of The Matrix wore off for me over the years. I'm picking Dark Knight.
on 5/2/2010
Matrix I think is just more interesting. Love both films. Like others have said, Dark Knight is a blast to watch but the Matrix goes deeper and was more revolutionary.
on 5/12/2010
@admiralpiett: I'm going to acknowledge that The Matrix is probably a more groundbreaking and influential film. I still love it. However, for me, TDK is all about that brilliant cast (not just Ledger), who all act the hell around everybody in The Matrix except Hugo Weaving and Joe Pantoliano, and honestly, it also has its moments that thrilled the hell out of me. I see your lobby gunfight, and raise you that brilliant opening bank heist.
on 9/24/2010
Now this is uncalled for, flickchart! :(

see number 1, sums it all up for me - http://www.squidoo.com/the-top-10-over-rated-films-of-all-time
@bob.cousins: While both are good, I would argue that The Dark Knight is more overrated than The Matrix.

it imposible 4 me 2compare
There is no spoon. And re the discussion up top, none of the scenes in TDK match the lobby shoot-out.
THE TDK PROJECTED A VERY SAD DARK MOVIE. THE MATRIX, EVEN THOUGH IT ALSO WAS DARK, IT GAVE YOU A SENSE OF RELIEF AND ALMOST JOY.

The matrix has heavenly power!! Neo like Jesus comes into his all power after dying. Trinity which is the father mopheus, son Neo and Holy ghost Trinity. Mr. Smith and his agents. The devil and his demons. Two worlds the one think we live in. The real spiritual demons and angels. Bending of spoon is Neo ability to work in the supernatura FAITH. If you have faith of mustard seed you could move mountains. We have a Judas who betrays Neo. MATRIX IS JESUS FAVORITE MOVIE, and the matrix loves all people in his movie. Lawrence Fishburne, Jada pinkett, key holder, ghost, just like Jesus does!! Matrix 4.
TDK over any Keanu vehicle.

The Matrix. It had a better story, better action and better visuals. Although ive got to give the acting to The Dark Knight. But apart from that The Matrix crushes.
on 3/10/2012
The Matrix is much better than The Dark Knight.
on 4/4/2012
The Matrix was the very film that made me into a movie fan, therefore it gets my vote over the Dark Knight.
on 4/28/2012
The Dark Knight had the better story, better acting and better action. It wins.
on 6/17/2012
Ha ha ha Dark Knight over The Matrix. That is truly laughable. The Matrix is one of the few truly original films in the history of cinema.
Matrix...just too damn good. Changed the way science fiction films are done today. It wins...
on 7/7/2012
The Dark Knight for me. I found The Matrix rather underwhelming.
I'm glad I saw The Matrix for a second time. It's brilliant, intelligent, and a truly original mindbender. But against the greatest of superhero flicks? No contest.
on 8/6/2012
TDK for sure.
on 11/24/2012
Ok, now that's a serious shit. I think that any choice here seems the wrong one.
