Two very different takes on real-life boxers. Cinderella Man was a well-made, albeit predictable, heart-warming tale about Jim Braddock, a boxer who needs to win to support his family in Depression-era New York. And while Crowe, Zellweger and especially Giamatti give more than adequate performances, they just cannot hold a candle to De Niro's powerhouse turn as Jake La Motta, the troubled champion also from New York, and Ron Howard is simply no match for Scorsese, who's use of elliptical narrative, breathtaking lighting and some truly disturbing sound effects amount to one of the greatest biographical films ever.
