Oh jeez. Spielberg's two best films. I think Raiders overall though.

Both are extremely engaging but extremely manipulative. Hanks performance in SPR is exceptional, one of my favorite's of his career, but the film meanders in ways that sometimes feel unfocused. While certainly less serious, I think Raiders is equally effective in its way and Ford's performances is one of the great 'star performances' of all time. Paced like a racehorse and endlessly entertaining, Raiders takes the cake here for me.
Saving Private Ryan is great at the beginning, very good towards the end, and merely pretty good in the middle. Raiders of the Lost Ark is great throughout.

Spielberg sure knows how to get things started. The temple escape from RAIDERS and the D-Day battle from PRIVATE RYAN are among my favorite openings to a film. These two are easily his best directed efforts but SPR is simply phenomenal. Hanks destroys Ford when it comes to acting although the chaotic action provides neither of the two much room to work with.
