Onibaba vs. Who Wants to Kill Jessie?

It's a New Wave showdown (Japanese vs. Czech). Onibaba is a bleak tale of lust, murder and betrayal. Everybody in it is unlikable, which adds to the entertainment value. Most of the movie has a cynical soap opera quality. It's the ending that disturbs. Who Wants to Kill Jessie? is entirely not bleak. It's one of the funnest movies I've ever seen. I guess the misery in Onibaba isn't something I'm always in the mood to watch. Who Wants to Kill Jessie? is pretty much always enjoyable. I do think that Onibaba is beautiful visually, though. That's always worth watching.

Onibaba is amazing in its atmosphere of violence, lust and greed, but Who Wants to Kill Jessie is simply wonderful.
